Sean Wilkinson earned his B.A. from Antioch College and his M.F.A. from the Rhode Island School of Design. He studied with Minor White, Harry Callahan, and Aaron Siskind. He taught at Harvard University before becoming a member of the faculty at the University of Dayton, where he established B.A. and B.F.A. programs that have earned national reputations.

His photographs have been seen in more than ninety gallery and museum exhibitions across the USA and internationally, and they are included in more than twenty-five significant collections here and abroad. He has received three Ohio Arts Council Fellowships and three Montgomery County Fellowships among many other awards and prizes. Wilkinson served as chair of the Department of Visual Arts and as the Graul Endowed Chair in Arts and Languages. He also taught in study abroad programs in Florence, Rome, Athens, and London, as well as in China. Now retired from UD, he holds the titles of Distinguished Service Professor and Professor Emeritus.
