Anatomy (2014-2015)
These images come from a book entitled Anatomy for Art Students that first appeared in 1896. I used the fourth edition, published in 1915.
I am touched by the grace and mystery of these anonymous women and men from another era. There is nothing exotic or abstract about them. They were probably just eking out an existence posing for an earnest manual of illustrated instructions for aspiring beginners. But they seem to me noble, serene, and inscrutable beings that far transcend the simple purpose their images were meant to fulfill.
